Burkett is currently serving as a correspondent for WABC-TV. Before that, he worked as a reporter for WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut, from 1986 to the present. Additionally, he was present in 2005 when Israel withdrew its troops from the Gaza Strip.

As a result of his dedication and talent as a reporter, Burkett has been honored with a number of accolades, including the George Foster Peabody Award, the Allen B. DuMont Broadcaster of the Year Award presented by Montclair State University, the Edward. R. Murrow award, four times the Emmy Award, and an Emmy for Outstanding On-Camera Achievement in New York.

Burkett was elected president of the National Academy of Television Arts and Science in 2011, and he will serve in that capacity until 2015. Between the years 2014 and 2018, he was a member of the Academy’s Executive Committee. Then, in June 2016, he was elected to the position of Vice Chairman of the Academy, a position he held until June 2018. In May 2019, the chapter’s Board of Governors announced that Burkett had been chosen to serve as President of the New York Chapter for the third time. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of Newark Public Radio in September 2019, which is the organization that runs WBGO-FM, a jazz radio station in Newark that operates on a non-profit basis.

Following his graduation from Elizabeth High School in 1980, Burkett enrolled in Columbia University. There, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in international affairs. In addition, Burkett is now a professor at Columbia University.
