DuMont Broadcaster of the Year Award presented by Montclair State University, the Edward. R. Murrow award, four times the Emmy Award, and an Emmy for Outstanding On-Camera Achievement in New York.

Burkett was elected president of the National Academy of Television Arts and Science in 2011, and he will serve in that capacity until 2015. Between the years 2014 and 2018, he was a member of the Academy’s Executive Committee. Then, in June 2016, he was elected to the position of Vice Chairman of the Academy, a position he held until June 2018. In May 2019, the chapter’s Board of Governors announced that Burkett had been chosen to serve as President of the New York Chapter for the third time.
