Marriott helped to start the NW Weather and Avalanche Center with Mark Moore. In the 1970s, the WSDOT paid for the University of Washington Central Avalanche Hazard Forecast Research program, which is where he got his start. Besides that, he came up with a way to predict mountain weather and avalanche danger and a system for doing so. He also designed and set up the hardware and software for the Cascades and Olympics automatic weather station network.

Marriott studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Master of Science in Meteorology. Moreover, he studied at the University of Washington and earned a Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology in 1978.
