However, on Monday morning, the psychologist and former commentator on The O’Reilly Factor shared her personal account of how she believes her romantic snub of Bill O’Reilly cost her a paid job at Fox News. Attorney Lisa Bloom made the announcement for the press conference on Sunday. She framed it as a follow-up to a recent article that was published in The New York Times. That article stated that five women have received payments totaling $13 million from O’Reilly in exchange for not pursuing litigation or speaking out about sexual harassment accusations against him.
On Monday, Walsh shared the account of how a misunderstanding after dinner resulted in her termination from the network in the office that Bloom maintains in Woodland Hills, California.
According to Walsh, she was a frequent guest on the show, and O’Reilly invited her to have dinner at the Bel-Air Hotel. O’Reilly was a fan of Walsh. They talked about her future at the network while they were eating dinner, and he gave the impression that they were planning to hire her as a paid contributor soon. He went so far as to tell her that his best friend Roger Ailes was supportive of the relocation. However, as dinner was over, O’Reilly said, “let’s get out of here,” and invited her up to his hotel room. She accepted his invitation. When she gently declined and explained that as a single mother, she wanted to set a good example for her kid, the atmosphere shifted dramatically.
In an exclusive interview that took place before the press conference, Walsh discussed a variety of topics with Bill Handel of KFI. She admitted that the awkward contact in and of itself was not particularly harmful, and she referred to O’Reilly’s conduct as “dating strategies straight out of Mad Men.” Walsh revealed to her radio colleague that after the incident at the hotel, she tried to “play nice with the big dog,” and that it never occurred to her to report the incident because she was unaware that job applicants could file sexual harassment complaints. Walsh was a victim of sexual harassment herself when she was applying for a job.
The majority of this was related to Walsh in the cramped conference room that was located within Bloom’s office. She shared her thoughts by stating, “I assumed that he would get over it and behave like a professional.” However, in the months that followed, Walsh claims that O’Reilly became increasingly unfriendly, even going so far as to question her on set in a direct manner, “When are you leaving?” Not much longer after that, the network decided to cancel her “Are We Crazy?” segments and she was let go.
Walsh explained to Handel that she did not “come forth” to the Times with her information. Emily Steel, a dogged reporter, found her by watching old tapes of the show and focusing on the appearances of gorgeous blonde-haired and blue-eyed women who had abruptly stopped making appearances on the program.
