During the ten years that Tuwanda worked to perfect her skills in front of the camera, she became effectively involved in the creation and co-delivery of a few station projects. These projects included the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon and the Children Miracle Network Telethon that helped the Monroe Carell Jr. Kids’ Hospital at Vanderbilt. Both of these telethons benefited the hospital.
The more responsibilities that Tuwanda had to take on as a creator of one-of-a-kind ventures, the more evident it became that she yearned to do art full-time. Therefore, in 1992, Tuwanda was presented with the opportunity to become an associate maker on the cast and crew of “All the Rage.”
In 2003, Tuwanda made the transition from working behind the camera to working in front of it by becoming a field correspondent for the show “All the Rage.” This promotion came a half year after she had been given the role of full-time producer on the show. In addition to the responsibilities she has with “All the Rage,” Tuwanda also hosts “The Plus Side of Nashville” and “All the Rage” spin-off show “Taste of the Town” for NewsChannel 5+.
Tuwanda is actively involved in the community around her, volunteering her time to a number of different organizations and boards, such as the Monroe Carell Jr. Kids’ Hospital at Vanderbilt Advisory Board, the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences, the Oasis Center, YMCA Black Achievers, the Nashville Film Festival, and Youth About Business.
Additionally, she is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated organization. In 1995, Tuwanda was selected for a Mid-South Regional Emmy for a series of Black History Month recognitions. In 2007, she was given the award for her work on a NewsChannel5 special that featured the hit Broadway musical “The Lion King.”
Tuwanda was awarded a public distinction in 2015 when she was given the title of “TV Media Person of the Year” by the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This honor was bestowed upon her in recognition of her more than three decades of dedication and efforts to advance and raise funds for the Monroe Carell Jr. Kids’ Hospital at Vanderbilt.
