Kovaleski became a member of the NBC Bay Area Investigative Team in the month of December 2011. His most recent effort brings to light issues that exist at sporting venues all around the state of California. According to the findings of his research on the VTA Light Rail system in Santa Clara County, a significant number of passengers do not pay the required fares.

His second report demonstrated that despite having been in operation for two years, the light rail system had not been able to provide its riders with credit card readers. A number of East Bay school districts were made aware of a history of difficulties that had not been reported thanks to his research on the mechanical issues that plagued a major school bus operator in the East Bay.

Kovaleski aired a number of stories about issues with Denver’s emergency ambulance service during the summer of 2008 while working at KMGH-TV in Denver. These stories focused on issues such as response times that were nearly twice as long as the national standard in Denver.

The news accounts also revealed that the Denver International Airport did not have a permanent ambulance station, despite the fact that it was located more than 30 kilometers from the city’s core.

When the captain of Continental Airlines Flight 1404 lost control of the plane in December of 2008, there were more than one hundred individuals on board. As the aircraft was attempting to take off from Runway 34 Right, it overshot the runway and caught fire. According to the information that Kovaleski obtained from the ambulance service, it took the first emergency ambulance a total of 33 minutes to arrive at the scene.

It wasn’t until March 2009 that the documentary “33 Minutes to 34 Right” was made available to the public. It resulted in numerous adjustments being made to the procedures and guidelines that are followed by Denver’s ambulance service, one of which was to permanently station an ambulance at DIA.

Kovaleski admitted in May of 2010 that he had accepted gifts and a sponsored trip to Pebble Beach from numerous members of the board of directors of Pinnacol Assurance who were chosen by the state. The management of Pinnacol Assurance, including the control of the organization’s expenditures, was delegated to the board.

Because of Kovaleski’s research, the board underwent significant transformations, including the election of a new president and the establishment of stringent guidelines on travel and gifts that were approved by board members.

The source-based investigative work conducted by Kovaleski led to interviews with four Denver FBI agents, which provided an inside look at the investigation and conviction of acknowledged terrorist Najibullah Zazi. The FBI office in Denver was able to figure out how a national terror plot against New York City was going to be carried out, as was shown in the documentary that lasted for thirty minutes.

His reports and investigations have been featured on CNN, ABC’s “Good Morning America,” ABC’s “20/20,” as well as CNN’s “Larry King Life.”
