Every year, Stamberg comes up with a new way to share the recipe. In 2010, he shared the dish with rapper Coolio. People call the recipe “Mama Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish Recipe,” but Craig Claiborne first put it in his food column in 1959.
One of her most memorable conversations was with Milton Friedman, an economist who won the Nobel Prize. Friedman and Stamberg had a debate about the benefits of the free market. Stamberg said that her talks with “Russian cabbies” in New York had shown that the expats liked living in the former Soviet country more than “how dreadfully tough their lives are here (the United States).” Friedman disagreed with Stamberg’s point of view, saying, “If you really want to know what they really believe about the relative merits of the two systems, look at what they do, not what they say.” They just stay here. They don’t come back.” Moreover, from 1985 to 1986, Stamberg was the first host of the PBS arts show Alive from Off Center.
