Twelve years prior to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, Audé got his start in the television news profession working originally as a weather announcer and reporter. He was motivated to do so by Barbara Walters. In an interview that took place in 2006 on the Today Show, Audé stated that he “couldn’t walk back to the newsroom and say “I couldn’t capture the story” if he went to cover a story on the second floor of a building that did not have elevators or ramps.”
Her presence during the introduction of the new station made her stand out, which led to her initial recruitment as a “weather kid.” After working for one year at WIS-TV, she was promoted to the role of weekend anchor, and by 1982, she became the first full-time female anchor in the history of television in Columbia when she joined long-time anchorman Ed Carter in the weekday newscasts.
