Pak, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, moved to California with her parents when she was five years old. She grew up in Union City, California, a San Francisco suburb. Pak’s parents own a small restaurant in Oakland, California’s downtown.
She had no intention of pursuing a career in television. Pak volunteered for the YMCA program Youth and Government while attending James Logan High School, an organization dedicated to involving and educating young people in the political process. She also participated in the school’s forensics squad, where she did expository speaking.
Pak finished eighth in California in 1992. KGO-TV, the ABC affiliate in San Francisco, interviewed her for the news show Straight Talk ‘N Teens. The program director of another station saw the article and invited her to host the teen-focused magazine show First Cut on KRON, San Francisco’s then-NBC (now MyNetwork TV) affiliate. This “after-school employment” introduced Pak to the world of entertainment. Ice-T was her first big interview on the show.
She was discovered again while studying political science at the University of California, Berkeley when the producer of a PBS science documentary called Newton’s Apple watched a film of her. Following graduation, Pak was approached by ZDTV (formerly TechTV, now G4), a cable network focused on technology and the Internet. Pak was hired as a correspondent on KRON after working for a year on Internet Tonight, a daily half-hour show on ZDTV (now G4).
She sent a tape to the new cable network Oxygen in order to leave San Francisco. Pak was hired as a host for the show Trackers after a year-long audition procedure and relocated to New York City. MTV noticed her and she quickly became MTV’s first Asian face.
Pak has reported on the MTV Movie Awards, Sundance Film Festival, and MTV Video Music Awards. She also co-hosted MTV’s pre-Grammy show with Kurt Loder.
