Pensgen first took to the ice at the age of six, inspired to start skating after seeing figure skating on television. Beginning in 1998, the majority of her training was done at the Onyx in Rochester with Richard Callaghan. In addition, she trained at the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, under the tutelage of Mitch Moyer. She competed on the figure skating team for the Genesee Club.

At the 1999 ISU Junior Grand Prix held in Canada, Pensgen won the bronze medal in the single skating competition. She then went on to win the silver medal at the Four Continents Championships in the year 2000. Her best finish in the United States Championships was sixth place in the year 2000.

Pensgen was under Callaghan and Sergei Petrovsky’s tutelage in the state of Michigan for the 2001–2002 season.

Her apprenticeship under Diana Ronayne began in 2003 and took place in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
