Shelby Hays Born to Dream

My name is Shelby Hays, and when I was a kid, all I wanted to do was study the weather and become a meteorologist. I grew up in the sleepy little town of Velma, Oklahoma.

Storms have always given me quite a bit of anxiety, even from a very young age. If there was even a remote possibility of storms throughout the night, I would make sure to have a bag packed and my tennis shoes by the bed. As I got older, I became increasingly interested in learning as much as I could about storms in the hopes that this would allow me to avoid them and assist others in doing the same. What started out as a need to keep an eye on Gary for potential warnings evolved into a desire in me to grow up and not only become a meteorologist but rather to become the next Gary England and assist in keeping my fellow Oklahomans safe from the wrath of mother nature.

When I told people that I had everything planned out, they would chuckle and think it was “cute,” but not everyone believed that I was serious about this major plan that I had. On the other hand, while I was in high school, I had a science teacher who saw how seriously I was considering this endeavor and made an effort to assist me. Mrs. Johnston set up a day for me in which I could observe the operations of the weather department at News 9. That day reaffirmed all I had dreamed of becoming; becoming a meteorologist was no longer just a desire; it was a need, and there was going to be nothing that could stop me from achieving it. That day, Gary provided me with a wealth of advice regarding what I should do when I got to OU as well as when I could apply for an internship.

At the moment, I am a student at The University of Oklahoma, where I am working toward a degree in Meteorology while also pursuing a minor in Nonprofit Organizational Studies. My on-air experience as a meteorologist has been enhanced by my participation in OU Nightly, where I serve as an intern in the meteorology department of News 9 and where I am also highly active.

When I’m not at school or worrying about the weather, one of my favorite things to do is spend time with my family. We put in a significant amount of time fishing, walking to the lake, and simply appreciating the beautiful natural surroundings. I have a soft spot in my heart for animals, and there are times when I almost consider Mr. Speckles to be my kid.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to work as an intern, and I would be more than happy to respond to any questions that you might have for me, or we could simply have a conversation about how wonderful it is to be a native of Oklahoma.
