Robinson began her professional life in the television industry in Detroit, Michigan, at WGPR-TV (now known as WWJ-TV), which was the first African-American-owned television station in the United States. After that, she worked as a medical reporter and weekend anchor for WISN-TV in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she was recognized with an award from the Associated Press for her series on women and cancer. Robinson was also the host of the daily chat show Milwaukee’s Talking for a number of years.
Later, in 1995, she became a reporter and anchor for the newly founded KEYE-TV in Austin, Texas. There, her series “Profiles in Power,” which was about women who had made an effect in Central Texas, won an award from the American Women in Radio and Television.
She had previously worked as a reporter and anchor for WSVN-TV in Miami, Florida, prior to joining the Access Hollywood team. During her time at the station, Robinson was the primary anchor for coverage of both the Clinton impeachment hearings and Hurricane George, which caused catastrophic damage in the Florida Keys. Robinson went to Oklahoma in order to conduct interviews with survivors of the bombing in Oklahoma City. On Who Wants to Be a Millionaire during the week of June 8–12, 2009, she served as a substitute for Meredith Vieira as the host.
In October 2010, Robinson appeared as a guest star on an episode of the game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics that included a celebrity edition. She participated in the game and earned $10,000 for the charity of her choice, Girls, Inc. Robinson and Al Roker were the hosts of the NBC broadcast of the Tournament of Roses Parade on both January 1, 2011, and January 2, 2012, for NBC.
