Shannon O’Donnell KOMO News

On the weekday evening shows for KOMO4 News and KOMO Newsradio, O’Donnell covers the weather in Western Washington. Shannon’s love for “all things atmospheric” began when she was 7 years old and her Bellevue grade school taught a unit on weather. Harry Wappler, a famous local weatherman, came to visit while they were in school, and Shannon was hooked.

O’Donnell loved talking and the weather, so she chose a job that mixed the two. O’Donnell likes how putting weather education back into the classroom is like going full circle. She often goes to elementary schools in the area with her traveling “weatherwise” show. While they help her with different projects, the kids learn more about things like pressure, clouds, precipitation, and lightning. The Girl Scouts and Microsoft have written about her work with STEM education.

O’Donnell was the morning weather at KNTV, an NBC station in San Francisco, for seven years before she joined KOMO. While she lived in the Bay Area, she was asked to be a guest host on national shows at MSNBC and Early Today. She liked working with Al Roker from The Today Show.

O’Donnell also worked as a weather reporter for KING and NWCN from 1995 to 2000 and again in 2008. Shannon worked at KOMO as a weather director while she was in college. She says that Steve Pool’s constant lessons in front of the green screen helped her move on to working on camera!

In his first year at the University of Washington, O’Donnell worked as a study assistant for the famous Professor Robert A. Houze, Jr. in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences. As part of her job, she had to fly P-3s over the Pacific to collect information that would help improve forecasts for northwest storms and launch radiosondes, or weather balloons, from the masts of NOAA research ships.

O’Donnell is now back in the Department working on different research projects, such as the Olympex field program, which aims to calibrate and confirm the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) constellation of satellites’ measurements of precipitation over the Olympic Peninsula. Shannon created and started a class called “Media & Meteorology” in 2019. This class teaches the next generation of weather forecasters how to use “The UW Dawgcast” to share weather and science information.

O’Donnell has won a lot of awards in her area. Moreover, in 2005 and 2006, the Golden Gate Chapter of the American Women in Radio and Television named her “Best Meteorologist.” She was on the morning news show at KNTV that won several Emmys and has been in Men’s Health magazine.

Moreover, O’Donnell is writing some books for kids that she wants to sell to raise money for the National Sarcoidosis Foundation and the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. O’Donnell is from the Sammamish Plateau and went to Redmond High School and the University of Washington, where she got her B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences. However, in 1998, she got the AMS Seal of Approval.
