During the summer of 2000, Holinde began his work at WBKO in the production department. In March of 2001, he moved on to become a member of the First Alert Storm Team. Shane was given the position of nightly meteorologist at WBKO ABC in the spring of 2003. Although he was too little to remember it at the time, his parents say that the “Great Ohio Valley Blizzard of 1978” was the first significant weather event that captivated their son while he was growing up close to Owensboro, Kentucky. “Picture a young child dressed in pajamas racing from window to window, marveling at the blowing and drifting snow outside, while his mother tries desperately to keep him in bed,” the speaker continues. “It’s a scene straight out of a children’s book.” “There was a blackout, and the temperature inside the house plummeted!” After some time had passed, Shane got his first taste of performing in front of an audience when he read a weather forecast he had written on a poster board to the other children in his elementary school class. Shane has covered a wide range of meteorological events, from ice storms to tornadoes, but he hasn’t lost any of his excitement for the field of meteorology in the nearly three decades that have passed since those days.
In addition, he worked for one semester as a disc jockey for WWHR-FM, which was formerly known as New Rock 92. He has also been known to spin some tracks at sound-and-light events in his hometown of Owensboro for a group aptly named “Thunder and Lightning Music.” Shane completed a weather internship during the latter part of his time at the University of Louisville at WKLY, which is the local affiliate of the CBS network.
