His career in journalism has brought him all over the country, starting in Columbia, Missouri, where he worked as a reporter for KMIZ, then to Pocatello, Idaho, where he was a weekend anchor for KPVI, and finally to Sacramento, California, where he began working at KCRA in 1998.
Upon his return to California, he reported on significant events such as the killings in Yosemite and the subsequent arrest of Cary Stayner, the trial of Ted Kaczynski, sometimes known as the “Unabomber,” the recall and election of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the wildfires that occurred in California.
In 2005, Ryan left his job in the journalism industry to pursue a career as a sports anchor, which had been a lifetime goal of his. He began his career in San Diego at KSWB before moving on to KXTV in Sacramento. There, he was able to cover the 49ers’ trip to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Golden State Warriors’ three NBA Championships, and the Giants’ three World Series victories.
His understanding and enthusiasm for sports extend much beyond the role of a simple fan. While attending college, Ryan worked for the Golden State Warriors as an employee because he was considered too short to play for the team. On game days during his time at RUN TMC, he was in charge of operating the music and animation board. In addition to having a career in broadcasting, one of the things that he is most proud of is having recently completed his first film.
In his spare time, Ryan trained in various forms of martial arts for almost two decades, specializing in Muay Thai kickboxing and boxing. In addition to that, he thinks of himself as an avid runner. In December of 2021, he finished his first marathon in Honolulu, and it was a hard experience for him.
Ryan is honored to be a five-time Emmy winner and has received several nominations for both anchoring and reporting during his career. Ryan is a member of the NATAS. In addition to that, he has been a member of the Asian American Journalists Association for a significant amount of time.
