Ross Becker Career

Before heading to WTHR-TV in Indianapolis in 1977 to work as a weekend anchor and field reporter, Becker started his career in broadcasting in 1975 as a reporter at WFRV-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He subsequently relocated to KCBS-TV (formerly known as KNXT) in Los Angeles in 1980 as a reporter, eventually rising to the positions of weekend anchor, leader of the Investigative Team, and host of a fleeting broadcast at 7 o’clock.

He won three Emmys for his reporting on the Southern California windstorms and the Cerritos plane tragedy. Additionally, he won the AP Mark Twain Award for news writing and six Golden Mike Awards. He held the position of President of the Radio/TV News Association of Southern California for two years while working at KCBS. Warren Olney was replaced as the station’s only news anchor by Becker at KCOP-TV in 1990. For his coverage of the Reginald Oliver Denny beating, which sparked the riots in the Los Angeles area, he won an Emmy at KCOP.

Becker left KCOP in 1995, citing the “sold-out, filthy, tabloid” journalism in Los Angeles as his reason. In January 1996, Becker was employed as a contract journalist and spoke with O.J. Simpson for 90 minutes. It was Simpson’s first interview since being exonerated of all murder-related charges. At the time, the interview caused controversy because it was broadcast on a videotape for sale rather than on “free” television or cable.

Becker mentioned this at the start of the interview and ultimately ended up probing Simpson about the children, money, and the then-ongoing legal litigation, despite their agreement not to be discussed during the interview. In the video, Simpson claimed that those “in Faye Resnick’s circle” were responsible for the killing and that Mark Fuhrman had fabricated evidence to support Simpson’s guilt. A lot of television networks including the National Enquirer, which published a lot of information about the trial, declined to run advertisements for the film.

Becker made the decision to take a vacation from watching big-city television news after the interview. In 1995, WIEL, WKMO-FM, and WRZI-FM in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, were acquired by Becker and his wife, Linda. In 2000, he sold the stations to Commonwealth Broadcasting, and in 2001, he returned to the broadcast news industry by taking a job as an anchor for MSNBC. The next year, he joined KTNV-TV in Las Vegas as its nightly anchor, bringing him back to local news.

In December 2004, Becker left KTNV to “pursue new opportunities.” Before being given a full-time position, he returned to Los Angeles in 2005 and worked as a freelance reporter for KNBC. He departed KNBC at the end of 2006 to work as an evening anchor for KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City, Utah. On December 31, 2009, he quit the network and started working for KUSI-TV in San Diego. He was a featured reporter and the co-anchor of the newscast at 11 o’clock at KUSI. Becker departed KUSI at the end of 2016 to work as the news director for KMIR-TV in Palm Springs, California.

Becker served as the Board of Directors’ previous president of APTRA, the Associated Press TV and Radio Association, which acts as a liaison between the Associated Press and 12 western states.
