In 1987, Romona sent her resume to WUAB in Cleveland, Ohio for consideration as a news anchor for the newly created 10 O’Clock News program. Her demo tape had “a scene of her being washed away by a wave that seemed like it was churned up by a hurricane.” Her poise and self-assurance shone through in the recording, which made an impression on the producers.
As a result of this position, she became the first African-American woman to ever anchor a nightly newscast in the city of Cleveland. As a result, she created history in Cleveland by being the first African American woman to ever serve as the solo anchor of a nighttime newscast. In 2011, she was one of four journalists who were given the opportunity to do one-on-one interviews with President Barack Obama in the White House.
On December 16, 2011, her contract was no longer valid. She severed her ties with Channel 3, which she had had for the previous 15 years.
