After beginning his career at KITV4 in July 1980 as a sports anchor and reporter, he eventually parted ways with the station three years later in July 1987. After some time, he moved to the San Francisco Bay area and began working at KPIX-TV and KGO-TV. At KPIX-TV, he served as a sports anchor for a period of twenty years. KGO-TV was his second employer. Where he had worked for the previous eight years until finally leaving the station in August of 2018.
Rick has been presented with a number of accolades and distinctions over the course of his career, including two Emmy awards at the regional level. The Radio-TV News Directors Association, the Peninsula Press Club, and the Associated Press are the organizations that presented the honors. In addition to this, he has received the Readers’ Choice Award for Favorite TV Anchorperson four times from the readers of the Alameda Newspaper Group. Additionally, during his first year working at KITV, the local sportscasters and sportswriters selected him as the Hawaii Sportscaster of the Year.

Not too long ago, he discussed the late Ed Lee, who had the distinction of becoming the first Asian American to hold the office of Mayor of San Francisco. Additionally, he was the producer of the documentary titled “Art of Gaman,” which highlighted the artistic talents of Japanese Americans who were incarcerated during World War II.
