Paul Heggen Biography
Paul Heggen is an American meteorologist who has won seven Emmy Awards and currently serves as the Chief Meteorologist for CBS News Bay Area and KPIX 5 in the Bay Area. Since the month of March 2020, he has been employed by this station.
Paul decided to pursue an education in geography, so he enrolled in the University of Denver. While he was there, he conducted research into how El Nino affects the weather patterns in the Rocky Mountains and earned a bachelor’s degree in the subject. After completing his undergraduate degree, he went on to earn a master’s degree in meteorology from Texas A&M University. During his time there, he focused his graduate school research on the lightning patterns that occur within severe and tornadic thunderstorms. This line of research helped him become better prepared for weather forecasting jobs in some of the most difficult markets in the country.

Heggen is currently the Chief Meteorologist for CBS News Bay Area, KPIX 5, where he works. At the age of four, he happened to be looking out the kitchen window when lightning struck a neighbor’s house, and while he was in kindergarten, a tornado skirted the town where his family resided. Both of these experiences had a lasting impression on him, and he has been intrigued by the weather ever since he can remember. After going through what those children did, some of them would develop a fear of thunderstorms. In March 2020, Paul started working at KPIX. Since he began his career, he has reported on a wide variety of weather events, including tornado outbreaks in the Southern Plains, blizzards in the Upper Midwest, and hurricanes along the coast of the Carolinas. Now that he is reporting on the microclimates of the Bay Area and forecasting the weather on the front lines of climate change, Paul is quite excited.
In the past, he has worked for radio stations in Raleigh, North Carolina; Nashville, Oklahoma; Tennessee; Tulsa; Huntington, West Virginia; Duluth, Minnesota; and Beaumont, Texas. In 2002, he was awarded the seal of approval from the American Meteorological Society, and in 2016, he updated that seal to the AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal. Over the course of his career, he has also been recognized with a number of accolades for his work in the field of weather reporting, including six Emmy Awards, as well as many “Best Weathercast” and “Best Weather Anchor” awards from the Associated Press and Society of Professional Journalists. The Television, Radio, and Digital News Association of the Carolinas conferred upon Paul the honor of “Weathercaster of the Year” for the year 2019. Paul uses his daily dinner break to go for a run or to the gym, and he also enjoys golfing, cycling, and playing softball when he is not reporting on the weather. In addition to that, he adores dogs.
