During the whole tornado outbreak on May 24, 2011, he tracked and reported life-saving information from SkyNews9, and he watched a mile-wide, EF5 tornado shred a route of destruction perilously near to the villages of Piedmont Oklahoma and El Reno. This information helped save lives.

During the severe weather season of 2013, Oklahoma experienced a number of surprise tornado outbreaks. During the destructive stretch that lasted for 12 days, a tornado with an EF5 rating leveled the town of Moore, Oklahoma, and an EF3 tornado with a record-setting width of 2.6 miles tore across the countryside just a few miles west of the urban region of Oklahoma City.

The devastating tornado that struck Oak Grove on March 6, 2017, was covered by Bender from StormTracker9, who provided the people with the only live photographs of the EF3 Twister prior to it barreling through their town. Fortunately, no lives were lost in the tornado’s path of destruction. Bender and his colleagues took home a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for their work covering breaking news stories about the disaster. Bender and his wife have two children, a son, and a girl, and they are quite involved in the activities of the church community in which they live. They have a black Standard Poodle that they’ve given the eponymous name “Nimbus”.
