Lowry has worked in the fields of tropical weather research and forecasting as well as emergency management over the past two decades. Before becoming a member of Local 10, he worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for many years in the capacity of Senior Emergency Management Specialist. During his time there, Michael was in charge of directing the agency’s plans for reacting to natural catastrophes of all kinds, but hurricanes in particular, in the southeastern United States.

Before he started working for FEMA, he was a subject matter expert on tropical meteorology and hurricanes. Most recently, he was a visiting scientist with the National Hurricane Center (NHC) National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), through its partnership with the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR). Before that, he worked for FEMA as a subject matter expert on tropical meteorology and hurricanes.

In addition to that, Lowry worked for The Weather Channel (TWC) as an on-air Hurricane Specialist and Tropical Program Lead for several years. During his time there, he provided network coverage for a never-ending string of storms and nor’easters by submitting stories with NBC Nightly News, MSNBC, TODAY, and CNBC.

In addition, he worked as a lead scientist at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami. In this role, he was responsible for the development of new tropical cyclone-related products for the National Weather Service (NWS). These products included new watches and warnings. Other positions he has held include those of emergency manager and senior scientist at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) in Alexandria, Virginia, as well as the position of a meteorologist for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, where he provided support for nine disasters that were announced by the president, including seven hurricane disaster announcements in 2004 and 2005. The National Hurricane Conference Outstanding Achievement Award in Meteorology was given to Lowry in 2013, and she was the recipient of this honor.
