Mark Fryklund KOCO 5
At KOCO 5 News, Fryklund is both a photojournalist and a First Alert storm chaser in his capacity as the latter. He has worked in the field of television news for the better part of four decades. His first job out of college was at KBJR-TV in Duluth, Minnesota, which is located in the state of Minnesota. His second job was as a photojournalist for KARK-TV in Little Rock, Arkansas, which is located in the state of Arkansas.
Mark started working as a photojournalist for KOCO-TV in the year 1984. In 1996, he started regularly reporting on various weather-related occurrences. Since that time, he has been working to better his skills in the field of storm chasing by attending annual storm spotter pursuing courses offered by the National Weather Service, and gaining knowledge from meteorologists working at KOCO.
The most memorable experience that Mark had while pursuing storms was in May of 2011 when he was following the tornado that would eventually hit Piedmont. They were obscured by the rain and were unable to get a good look at the whirlwind. In spite of this, they were close enough to feel the fury of the storm, which came dangerously close to lifting their truck off the ground. They waited for the storm to pass over the freeway, and once it did, they continued on in a cautious manner.
Mark is ecstatic about the opportunity that storm chasing affords him to put his education and experience to work for the benefit of the general people in times of severe weather events. He is aware that viewers depend on the coverage of local news outlets during storms to keep them safe, and he believes that KOCO is committed to informing the public whenever the weather takes a turn for the worse.
Mark’s other interests include carpentry, camping, and fishing with his family. When he’s not pursuing storms, he enjoys chasing storms. He is a member of the Quail Springs Baptist Church, where he serves on the audio/visual team and teaches Sunday school to children in the third grade. Fryklund also holds a pilot license for unmanned aerial vehicles.
Mark decided to further his education by enrolling at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature, creative writing, photography, and cinematography from this institution in 1977.
