Liberte Chan Sweater Gate

In May of 2016, Chan was part of an incident that was later given the hashtag #sweatergate. The incident occurred when weekend anchor Chris Burrous gave her a sweater to cover up her short Aidan Mattox dress while she was doing the weather report.

She was in the middle of giving a broadcast when all of a sudden, on the side of the screen, an arm appeared hanging from a gray cardigan. She questioned, “What the heck is going on?” because she was perplexed. You’d like me to put this on for you, right? Why? Simply because it is chilly in here? Chris gave a response by stating that they were getting many emails about her dress. Which can be met with the response “What? Really?’.

The video was dubbed a “sweater game” after it gained widespread attention on social media and went viral. Although Chan stated that there were no hard feelings, many people demanded that the station issue an apology, but she insisted that there were none.

Chan took to Twitter to explain how she found herself wearing a cocktail dress at eight in the morning. She tweeted that her original black and white dress clashed with the green screen, which caused her dress to become partially see-through.

Her personal blog reports that she stated that Chris gave her the sweater as a joke after the station received several emails complaining about her bare shoulders. Chris was the one who gave her the sweater.

“For the record, I want to clarify that KTLA did not instruct me to put on the sweater. I was merely laughing along with the joke that my co-anchor was telling, and if you’ve ever seen the morning show, you’ll know that the hosts are constantly making fun of each other and joking around. In addition, for the sake of completeness, there is no debate going on at KTLA. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision on my part to put on the cardigan; I was not directed to do so by my superiors.
