In addition to being a news anchor, Kris has also won an Emmy for her work as an investigative reporter. In 2008, she was named the finest news anchor in the Midwest region of the United States. After waiting another four years, Kris made his debut on television in 1981 with WQAD-TV in Moline. His father had spent the better part of the last three decades working as a news anchor at WQAD-TV. At WQAD, Kris went from being a weekend co-anchor and producer to being a weeknight co-anchor. In 1998, Kris had the opportunity of a lifetime when he was given the task of co-anchoring a special Father’s Day episode of KMBC 9 News at 10 with his own father.
In a poll taken by the readers of Kansas City Magazine in 2003 and 2001, he was voted their choice for “Best Reporter.” In addition, Hope House presented the prestigious Barbara Potts award to Kris in 2004 for her work in increasing community awareness about domestic abuse in Kansas City. Kris was the recipient of this honor. With locations in Independence and Lee’s Summit, Hope House has grown to become the most comprehensive domestic violence shelter in the state of Missouri.
Hispanic Media Association of Greater Kansas City included Kris as an active member of its board of directors. Through his participation in the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, he has also been an active participant in the effort to raise funds in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Since 1980, Kris has served as a co-host for the local MDA telethons that take place in Kansas City and the Quad Cities.
In October of 2012, Kris was honored by the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) by being inducted into the Silver Circle of the Mid-America Chapter of the organization. Kris vividly remembers having to deal with the aftermath of the tornado. Kris can’t recollect a few things, but he believes that the event is more memorable now, even if it took place 13 years ago. The one thing that they did not have to cope with was a funeral at any point in their lives.
