In 1980, John started his career in the television news industry as a writer and producer at WNGE-TV (now known as WKRN-TV), which was located in Nashville, Tennessee. Between the years 1981 and 1990, he worked as a reporter and producer for WSMV-TV in Nashville. During that time, he also hosted a weekday public affairs show. After that, he took a job as an anchor at KOMO-TV in Seattle, where he covered the weekend evening news.
In January of 1992, he wed Kerry Brock, who was working as a weeknight anchor at KOMO, and she eventually joined him at the Weekend Anchor Desk at KOMO. After that, he relocated his family back to Nashville, where he began working as a co-anchor for the evening news on WKRN-TV.

The network made the announcement in October 2006 that the reduction of jobs and the streamlining of operations would save the parent company, NBC Universal, around $750 million by the year 2008.
After he departed NBC, he went on to work for the Associated Press until July 2008, when he started working for Seigenthaler Public Relations. In 2013, he began his position as the anchorman for Al Jazeera America’s one-hour prime-time news broadcasts, which are broadcast at 8:00 pm Eastern Time and 11:00 pm Eastern Time, respectively.
