John Morales is a distinguished meteorologist from the United States who currently works for NBC 6 in the capacity of Chief meteorologist for the station. Since 2009, he has been serving in this capacity at this station.
After being reared in Puerto Rico, Morales eventually returned to his roots in Upstate New York to enroll in the atmospheric sciences program at the well-regarded Cornell University. After receiving his degree in 1984, Morales went on to work as a civil servant for the United States National Weather Service. While there, he rose through the ranks to become a Lead Forecaster in Puerto Rico, and then went on to become Chief of the South American Desk at the National Center for Environmental Predictions in Washington, District of Columbia.
His first job was with the Univision Network and its station in Miami, WLTV Channel 23, where he held the position of Chief Meteorologist from the years 1991 through 2002. After then, he held the position of Chief Meteorologist at WSCV Telemundo 51 from the years 2003 through 2008. It was on that show that he made history as the first Latino to ever fill in as a meteorologist for NBC’s Weekend Today show, and he did so more than once. In 2009, Morales was promoted to the position of Chief Meteorologist at the NBC affiliate in Miami, WTVJ NBC-6, and he continues in this role to this day.
The American Meteorological Society (AMS) has elected Morales as a Fellow, making him one of only a select few meteorologists and weathercasters to have this honor. His receipt of the 2007 AMS Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Advancement of Applied Meteorology is widely regarded as the most significant scientific acknowledgment of his work. He has been recognized as the Broadcaster of the Year by both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association, both of which he possesses the Seal of Approval for radio, television, and AMS weather casting. Morales was nominated for and won a regional Emmy Award at each of the three stations where he has worked. At this time, he is the proud recipient of the Silver Circle Award, which was given to him in recognition of the value of his services to television.
At the White House, Vice President Al Gore hosted a symposium on climate change and global warming, and Morales participated in it. In 2014, while the Third National Climate Assessment was being published, the President of the United States, Barack Obama, extended an invitation to him to relocate to the White House. In 2012 and 2017, he was chosen to co-author research that was relevant to America’s Weather Enterprise and the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) committees. This was his second time being given this opportunity.
Huracanes, a reference book written by Morales and published in Spanish about storms in the year 2000, bears the author’s name. In addition to mentoring young scientists and serving on the board of directors of various non-profit organizations in South Florida, Morales has been a pilot for Angel Flight Southeast, an organization that offers free flights to help children and adults travel greater distances to see doctors.
