On February 15, 1990, John began his career in radio by temporarily filling in for Rabbi Jacob J. Hecht on the New York radio station WEVD, where Rabbi Hecht had previously held the time slot. His show was an instant success thanks to his extensive knowledge of taxes, his tongue-in-cheek sense of humor, and his lightning-fast comebacks. Within a month’s time, “The Dr. John Georgiou Show” was going to be distributed to other television stations. In 2009, he also started serving as a co-host for the program Voices across America. Because of a disagreement with the network, John’s initial radio contract negotiations were put on hold in October of 1989. It was requested of him by the station WEVD that he legally change his name to John George. The network had the opinion that it was impossible to effectively market a show that featured a guest with a surname that was both so lengthy and so plainly of an ethnic origin.
John chose to leave the contract negotiations rather than give his approval to the modification. He argued that he was not “cut out for show business” if he was not going to be permitted to use his true name, and he insisted that this was unacceptable. In the end, the network gave in, and his radio show, which was eventually given the name “Dr. John Georgiou Income Tax Show,” made its premiere four months later.
John began working as a tax preparer professionally when he was just 14 years old, and he founded his first tax office in 1984 when he was just 18 years old.
