Hayes is currently working at WHNT News 19 for the 41st year of his career. It was in March of 1979 when he became a member of the staff at WHNT News 19. Following his graduation, Jerry was sought out by the News Department and offered a position as a boss tape supervisor. His relocation to Huntsville took place in the fall of 1978.
He worked at WHNT as a columnist, but after a significant amount of time, he started coming up with and writing the mooring for the end of weekly reports. In November of 1983, Jerry moved into the principal anchor position for the 6 o’clock and 10 o’clock news. Prior to this, he had filled in as a 10 o’clock co-anchor and later as an early afternoon anchor.
After the cyclone that occurred on April 27, 2011, he began gathering information for another report around 6:30 in the evening. After anchoring the late broadcast for more than three decades, he felt the need for a change in the fall of 2016.
Together with Christine Killimayer, he is now responsible for securing the weeknight 4 and 6:30 reports. In addition to the fact that they both work at the anchor desk, they also sat very close to one another in the reporting section of the newsroom!
