More than three decades have passed during Boll’s tenure as a transmission columnist. It was in 1988 when he began his professional career while he was still a student at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire.

He began his career as a low-maintenance sports photographer who primarily shot pictures for secondary school athletic features. After completing his education, he went on to work as a newsmaker and eventually transitioned into the role of a journalist and end-of-the-week anchor.

In 1993, he uprooted his life and went to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in order to begin working as a workday morning anchor for WWMT-TV. After a number of years at the station, he eventually became the anchor for the programs at 5:30, 6, and 11 o’clock at night while also stepping in as the supervisory proofreader in the newsroom.
