In the late 1990s, Gregg worked as an anchor for the morning news program at WIVT-TV, an ABC affiliate station located in Binghamton, New York. It was here that he was granted an exclusive interview with former President Bill Clinton of the United States. During his early career, Gregg worked for NY1 in New York City as a political reporter. During this time, he covered the mayoral campaign of 2001 and delivered substantial live broadcasts from Ground Zero on September 11, 2001. In addition, he covered the campaign for the office of mayor in 2001. Soon after that, he started working for Fox News.

In 2003, while the United States Army was engaged in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Gregg served as a correspondent embedded with the 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division. When a mortar round detonated nearby on March 31, 2003, Gregg was participating in the crossing of the Euphrates River with the 3rd Infantry Division. He got small shrapnel damage to the face as a result of the incident.

On April 5, 2003, Gregg was the first television journalist to transmit live pictures of the American armed forces entering Baghdad. This historic event took place. While Information Minister Muhammad Said al-Sahhaf, also known as Baghdad Bob, was being shown at one of his press conferences saying that Coalition forces were not in Baghdad, Fox News was showing, on split-screen, reporter Gregg riding a tank through the city.
