As time passed, Whelan’s passion for meteorology only grew more profound. Whelan would watch storms “live” from outside her home, pin paper maps to her walls as if she were providing a live weather forecast on the air, and compare her estimates to those of other area meteorologists. Moreover, she would even pursue storms herself. She did watch episodes of Bob Ryan and Doug Hill.
Whelan was quite active on campus, participating in groups and societies, including the National Broadcasting Society, the Geographic Society, and many more. During her time at SU, she was able to do two internships. Moreover, Whelan did her internship at WMDT in Salisbury, Maryland, and with Sue Palka at FOX 5 in Washington, District of Columbia. However, after she received her diploma, she was successful in obtaining her first on-air position at WBOC in Salisbury, Maryland.
Whelan began her career by hosting the weekend morning program and eventually moved on to hosting the weekday morning and noon shows. Her prognosis began with the capital city of DC. Eileen makes the most of her spare time by spending as much time as she can with her loved ones, exploring new craft brews, taking long walks on the beach while reading a good book, engaging in physical activity, making new acquaintances, and expanding her knowledge of the weather.
Whelan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Earth and Atmospheric Science as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Media from Salisbury University.
