Before beginning his career in academia, Dr. Scala held positions at The Weather Channel including those of Meteorology Training Coordinator and the network’s first on-camera Storm Analyst. Scala was there to provide live coverage of the unprecedented tornado outbreak that occurred in the Great Plains on May 3, 1999, August 11, 1999, the F2 tornado that struck Salt Lake City, and the F3 tornado that struck Fort Worth on March 28, 2000.

His first job was at the Goddard Space Flight Center of NASA, where he worked on the observation and numerical modeling of storms. This was the beginning of his professional career. In the course of his work, Dr. Scala has taken part in a number of research initiatives and has collected storm data from five different types of research aircraft. He has flown over the Amazon Rain Forest in the middle of the rainy season, as well as flown over Lake Michigan in the middle of the winter.
He formerly served in such capacity for the National Weather Association (NWA). After serving as a Councilor for two consecutive terms, John Scala is now a member of the NWA’s Committee on Societal Impacts of Weather and Climate, the Strategic Planning Committee, and he is the Treasurer of the organization. In 2009, he was honored with the Member of the Year Award bestowed by the National Weather Association.
In addition to these organizations, he is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, and Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society. He also serves on the Board of Continuing Professional Development for the American Meteorological Society.
In 2011, Dr. Scala successfully completed the requirements set forth by the American Meteorological Society in order to acquire the Certified Consulting Meteorologist title.
On a regular basis, he is requested to deliver presentations to insurance underwriters, claims adjusters and special investigators, first responders and emergency managers, as well as public schools and community service organizations, on the topics of storm damage, awareness of severe weather, and disaster preparedness.
