One of his Emmys was awarded to him for his exceptional reporting of shark diving off the coast of San Diego, during which one of the sharks tried to go into the cage with Don and the rest of his crew. In addition to this, Don reported on the civil war between the Contras and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and the beginning of the first Gulf War in the Middle East. Because he never shies away from a challenge, he was the first photographer to enter the explosion crater at the San Bruno Pipeline while it was still burning.
Don is an experienced sailor and a huge fan of being outside. He competes in sailing competitions on the bay, and on many weekends you can find him working as a strategist on a J24 or as crew on a Santa Cruz 50. In addition to that, he gives back to the community by acting as an assistant Scoutmaster for a large East Bay Troop in his spare time.
