Dennis O’Donnell is an American sports anchor and reporter who has won multiple Emmy Awards. He currently works for CBS News Bay Area and KPIX 5 in the role of serving as the Sports Director from Sunday through Thursday. Since August of the year 2000, he has been employed by this station.
Dennis chose to further his education at San Francisco State University, where he eventually finished with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio and Television after having enrolled there. In addition to that, he completed his associate’s degree at Diablo Valley College.

As the Sports Director for CBS News Bay Area on KPIX 5, O’Donnell works for CBS News. He serves as an anchor for KPIX 5 News from Sunday through Thursday. Dennis has been a staple in Bay Area sports broadcasting since 1982. Since then, he has covered every major Bay Area sports team in the championship game of their respective sport. Dennis became a member of the KPIX 5 News family in August of 2000.
In addition to hosting the day-to-day sportscast on KPIX 5 News Monday through Friday at 6 and 11 p.m. and Sunday through Thursday at 10 p.m. on The CW 44/Cable 12, Dennis also hosts or has hosted KPIX 5’s NFL post-game show “The 5th Quarter,” the #1 rated Sunday night sports show, “Gameday” every Sunday night at 11:30 p.m., and “49ers Preview,” “Last Honest Sports Show.” He serves as the master of ceremonies for all of the major Alzheimer’s events that take place in Northern California, such as the End Alzheimer’s to San Francisco Walk and Memories in the Making.
Dennis served as the pre-season voice of the San Francisco 49ers for a total of 13 seasons before transitioning to his present role as a sideline reporter for the team. Comcast Sports Network, Fox Sports, KPIX, and Bay TV are among the networks on which he has worked as a football and basketball play-by-play announcer.
Before joining KPIX 5, he worked at KRON-TV as an executive sports producer for a number of years. During O’Donnell’s tenure at KRON, the Associated Press awarded the station with the distinction of having “The Best Sports Cast in California” on no less than five straight occasions thanks to his services. In addition to his work at KRON, O’Donnell has anchored sports coverage for KOVR in Sacramento and KFTY in Santa Rosa. Both of these stations are located in the North Bay.
He has been awarded the APTRA for Best Sports Segment a total of four times. He is the winner of many Emmy awards in Northern California, including Emmys for his work as a sports anchor and feature reporter, among other categories.
