In a game against the Chicago Bears on December 9, 1984, he returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown, which is a Soldier Field record for most yards returned for a touchdown by an opponent that still holds today. It took him one year away from the league due to an injury, but he came back and played for the San Francisco 49ers from 1987 through 1988, during which time they won the Super Bowl for the 1988 season. He made his comeback after an absence of one year from the league due to the injury.
