While serving as a meteorologist for a Springfield television station, Darren has been successful in garnering a number of prizes, including two Associated Press awards—one for coverage of historic floods in October 2005 and the other for Best Weathercast in 2006—over the course of his career.
Darren has also reported live during extreme weather events, such as the huge flooding that occurred along the Merrimack River in May of 2006. Sweeney was recently presented with a “Breaking News” award from the Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists in recognition of his reporting on the EF-1 Wethersfield tornado that occurred in 2009.
While working at WFTX-TV in Fort Myers, Florida, he gained experience forecasting severe weather and pursuing hurricanes. In a number of instances, he was sent to New Orleans to assist sister stations in covering Tropical Storm “Isidore” and Hurricane “Lilly” in 2002. Prior to moving to New England, he worked at WFTX-TV in Fort Myers, Florida. Before moving to New England, he worked there.
During the course of his career, Sweeney reported on some of the most significant storms.
