Darren made up his mind to stay in Yosemite forever after going there for the first time when he was 19 years old. He then spent the next two summers working and living in the park.The way he spent his early summers will determine the rest of his life. Because Darren was so driven by a desire to have a deeper appreciation for the splendor of the natural world, he went back to his alma mater, the California State University at Northridge, to earn a degree in Physical Geography with a concentration in Climatology and Geomorphology. To put it another way, geomorphology is the study of the reasons behind why different landscapes exist on Earth. He claims that “even if Darren didn’t have this job,” he would still study the weather in the morning and talk about it with whoever would listen to him regarding it for the rest of the day. “Even if Darren didn’t have this job,” he continues, “he would still study the weather in the morning.”
In addition to receiving two Emmy awards for on-air performance, Darren has also been recognized by the American Meteorologist Society (AMS) as meeting the requirements to become a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM). The Certified Broadcast Meteorologist title is highly sought after in the field of broadcast meteorology as a means of achieving professional distinction and recognition.
