In 2017, Courtney’s documentary about the Downtown Rescue Mission was selected as the winner of the Edward R. Murrow Award. She was a member of one of three groups that worked together to produce a thirty-minute documentary on the assistance and recovery that takes place within the walls of the mission.

On July 13, 2017, Courtney experienced one of her proudest moments to date. On that day, prosecutors decided not to pursue burglary charges against a man who had been incorrectly identified in a case from 2016. The man’s mother reached out to WHNT News 19 for assistance in establishing her son’s innocence in the matter.

Over the course of four months, Courtney devoted countless hours to trying to persuade both the defense and the prosecution that they were looking at the wrong suspect. The charges were dismissed by the assistant district attorney just one day before her report was broadcast. She put in a lot of effort to ensure that the man’s charges were removed from his previously spotless record.

During her time in Dothan, Alabama, she focused primarily on covering stories from the Florida Panhandle. During that time, Courtney was awarded two Associated Press awards from the state of Florida; one was for Best Series Reporting, and the other was for Best Hard News Feature. Courtney conducted one-on-one interviews with current and former Florida prison inmates to gather information for the Best Series Reporting category.

The interviews focused on the participants’ experiences with re-entry programs. She collaborated with a journalist who had worked with her previously to produce coverage of the bodies being exhumed at the infamous Dozier School for boys in Marianna, Florida, in order to win the award for Best Hard News Feature.
