Cruz received a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Florida International University, where she also received high honors in her studies and graduated with. She graduated high school as the class valedictorian and went on to win the title of Miss Miami in 1995.
In 1992, she began her career in journalism by working for Dynamic Cablevision as a reporter and a weather anchor. After that, she started working at WSCV Channel 51 in 1994 as an entertainment reporter and an anchor for the weather.
