Chris Matthews Retires

Give Chris Matthews some of the credit for his apologies on Monday night as he was leaving. The MSNBC presenter recognized his past of making what he called “compliments on a woman’s attractiveness” in his sudden and unexpected farewell.

Such remarks were “never right,” he insisted, and he expressed regret for having made them. Although it seemed to miss the point that it’s problematic when a strong male stresses a woman’s sex appeal in a professional situation, the way it degrades and objectifies, I appreciated that this wasn’t one of that mealy-mouth “sorry if I upset you” apologies.

But this blatant sexism wasn’t the main reason he had to leave. One of the most well-known and lucrative cable news hosts didn’t pay attention, didn’t do his study, and viewed politics as a game where loud conflict was required. It was more about what you could see and hear on the air than it was about greenroom snobbery, especially in recent weeks but also going back a long way.

Years ago, Matthews called Hillary Clinton a “she-devil” and blamed any of her success in the 2008 presidential primary on the fact that, in his words, “her husband screwed around.” Matthews was a harsh and misogynistic opponent of Clinton. More recently, he made a grossly insensitive error by equating Bernie Sanders’ victory in the Nevada primary with the “fall of France” to the Nazis. Sanders is Jewish and has lost family members in the Holocaust.

But there was something worse for me, a sporadic viewer of “Hardball.”

He reportedly made $5 million a year in salary and exercised great power. He has long held the ability to influence public opinion on the pressing issues of the day. He repeatedly failed the crucial examination for someone in that position. He was prepared to express his own opinions, but he wasn’t ready to listen to those of his guests or to contribute substantial expertise to the discussion.

Matthews, who was frequently referred to as “bombastic” and who was undoubtedly an exuberant yeller, had the propensity to ask a question before changing it or adding his own opinion as his target was about to respond.

His conversation with Elizabeth Warren last month served as an illustrative example. The discussion focused on whether her opponent for president, Mike Bloomberg, had actually advised one of his employees to “kill it” when he learned she was expecting a child.

Matthews persisted in presenting the case as though he were Bloomberg’s defense counsel, describing the incident as a straightforward instance of “he said/she said” in which either party might be telling the truth.

Warren questioned him: Do you honestly believe Bloomberg is lying? Why would he act in such a way? When Warren could speak, she said that she agreed with the woman. She emphasized the reality of pregnancy discrimination in the workplace.
