Before beginning a career in broadcasting, Burton appeared on the television shows Romper Room, as a competitor on Star Search, and as the host of a cable television show called Simply Elegant that ran for an hour.

Burton began her career in broadcasting in 1989 at WGN-TV in Chicago, where she co-anchored “MBR: The Minority Business Report,” a weekly series that was syndicated nationally. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1990, she relocated to Peoria, Illinois, where she began working as a reporter for WMBD-TV.

From 1990 to 1992, she was an anchor at KWCH-DT in Wichita, Kansas. Burton joined WLS-TV in 1992 as a weekend co-anchor/reporter.
