After their mother was run over and murdered in the road, Chad’s stepfather, a kind and kind giant, took in several baby bunnies and raised them as his own.

The experience of assisting with the upkeep of those bunnies taught him a great deal about responsibility. His stepfather always pulled over to assist others who were stuck on the side of the road, despite the fact that many people today see it as a risky practice. Beggars on the street were always met with generosity from Chad’s stepfather; he never turned them away. He never gave a second thought to the potential risks involved in offering assistance to a person in need, maintaining the attitude that the benefits far outweigh the potential risks. Chad gained compassion as a result of those actions.

In the late 1980s, Chad’s stepfather first complained of feeling pain. The persistent headaches led physicians to discover a brain tumor that was cancerous. His life could be saved only by extending it through the several operations and radiation treatments that would be required. In spite of the harshness of the actual situation, he maintained his fortitude because to his faith. Hope was the lesson that this experience imparted to Chad. He never shied away from those shadows and lived each day to its absolute maximum potential. Even though he was in pain, he smiled, and this helped him learn the lesson of perseverance.

On a chilly morning in January of 1991, the forecast called for snow. The school was closed because a winter storm was expected to hit the area.
